AFA Chapter 118 Members

Please forgive this second copy of our newsletter, we had some issues with the first version we emailed.

A Note from our Chapter President

For those of you who have not been keeping up with the goings on of Chapter 118, you’ve missed some pretty interesting stuff in the last 6 months or so. We finally managed to convince Gerry Chapman to regale us with his World War II story. I’m sure most of you do not know that Gerry is a veteran of the guerilla campaign in the Philippines. Well, he is, and his talk about how an 18-year old kid became a wartime leader and contributor to Allied victory in the Pacific was truly inspirational. We presented an award to the Airman of the Quarter at the California Air National Guard Combat Communication Squadron. We had a monthly meeting in conjunction with the Civil Air Patrol San Diego Cadet Squadron 144 at the California Air National Guard Combat Communication Squadron facility. It was a real treat watching those kids go through their drills, and it was unexpected how much they appreciated our insight into Air Force life. Some of us had the opportunity to present AFA awards to some really deserving young folks at the SDSU ROTC awards ceremony and at local JROTC award ceremonies. CIMG0180One of our own, Leanne Babcock, graduated from SDSU this spring and became a 2nd Lieutenant in June. A number of us attended her commissioning ceremony.

We selected Ms. Keri Rose, a teacher at the School of Science and Technology in San Diego, as our Teacher of the Year for 1 May 2007 through 30 April 2008.

I know for sure that I am not covering half of what we have been doing these last 6 months. Hopefully most of you check out the website every now and again to see what we are doing and what is coming up next. If not, you should. In addition, I hope that you read your monthly Air Force Magazine, and that you are on the mailing list for Air Force Magazine Online Daily Report. It’s important for us to keep up on what is going on with our Air Force during these difficult times so we can react appropriately when necessary.

Because so many of our members belong to and participate in different veterans’ groups, we don’t usually do veterans’ appreciation events as a chapter. However, in September we are going to host, along with the Air Force Sergeants Association, a cook out at the Chula Vista VA Home. I encourage all of you to try to make this outing on Saturday, 20 September. And, as far as veterans’ support events, I’m sure that I don’t have to remind you all of Stand Down.

Besides this newsletter, our website, and our occasional general audience e-mails, I keep a short e-mail list of about 50 or so members who tend to be a little more active in chapter activities. I communicate with the folks on this short list concerning items that pop up during the month and might be of interest to the chapter. If you would like me to add your name to that list, just send me an e-mail at fran010106@yahoo.com.

Well, that’s enough from me. Come out and see us at a monthly meeting sometime soon, and enjoy the rest of this newsletter. But, most importantly, stay healthy and enjoy this marvelous life in beautiful San Diego.

President, AFA Chapter 118
